Sentient is a furniture design studio and workshop founded in 2012 and based in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The company designs and builds original and bespoke furniture from a 25,000-square-foot studio and workshop at 276 Greenpoint Avenue — a building the studio notes has "been home to craft and creative work for over three decades."
The operation is vertically integrated. As the studio puts it, "Everything happens under one roof: design, woodworking, metal fabrication, finishing, and upholstery," with master craftspeople specializing in each discipline. The custom process runs seven steps — consultation, concept development, 3D rendering, design refinement, production, hand finishing, and white-glove delivery — with a typical timeline of 12 to 14 weeks from concept to delivery, of which the first two to three weeks are design and approval.
Materials center on American hardwoods — black walnut, white oak, hard maple, cherry, and ash — sourced from regional mills and suppliers, with Pennsylvania mills named as a source. Specialty options include teak, ipe, ebonized oak, bleached oak, spalted maple, and reclaimed material. The studio states each material is selected for "its grain character, structural integrity, and how it will perform in its intended setting."
Sentient works across residential, commercial and corporate, and hospitality projects, and states it delivers both domestically and internationally. There is no project minimum: the studio says it builds "single bespoke pieces as readily as large commercial programs," citing 200-room hotel programs at the upper end. A trade program serves interior designers, architects, developers, and stagers. The Greenpoint studio and gallery is open to visits by appointment.
