Hellman-Chang is an American furniture maker founded in 2007 by Dan Hellman and Eric Chang, who grew up together in Maryland and taught themselves woodworking in Hellman's garage over high school and college summers; the company began selling in January 2008. It built its reputation as a Brooklyn workshop, and the design studio remains there — but manufacturing does not. The company's own site now reads "Born in Brooklyn, Grown in Georgia" and "Designed in Brooklyn, and hand-crafted in Georgia."
The move was deliberate. After growing 15–20% annually, the company relocated production to a 32,000 sq ft former food-testing facility in Dawsonville, Georgia beginning November 2019. Co-founder Eric Chang described the constraint: "our capabilities started to get choked. There were a lot of pain points." The binding limit turned out to be empty floor space for work in progress rather than equipment. Most Brooklyn staff parted ways; two senior employees relocated and the company hired local cabinetmakers from the region.
The line covers beds, cocktail tables, side tables, consoles, desks, dining tables, seating, casegoods, mirrors and lamps, with a published finishes program. Distribution runs through a trade showroom network, including Perennials and Sutherland and The Bright Group at NYDC, plus a virtual showroom and a trade login portal. The only address published on their own contact page is the Dawsonville production factory at 310 W. Hightower Drive.
